"SHE CAN WIN. YOU CAN WIN...We're more capable of lifting each other up and succeeding together." - Emily Bode, creative lifestyle blogger + graphic designer

Meet Emily Bode - graphic designer, handletterist, capsule wardrobe lover, + lifestyle influencer. If you keep up with me on Instagram, then you know all about Em since she's one of my main late night co-working buddies. I can't help but to describe her as a bright light because her genuine, caring spirit radiates from the inside out + inspires everyone who crosses her path. Which is why I am so excited that she is helping me kick off the first post of my new series CURRENT Community. This series is my way of collaborating with + spotlighting local creatives that I not only admire, but also live their brand + every sense of "community over competition". Today, I am hanging out with Emily {who recently rebranded} via interview. Learn more about why she started, her dream collaboration, + what #communityovercompetiton means to her.

K - Why did you start?
E - It felt right. I needed a space to pursue creativity my way. I've always wanted to do my own thing, but doubted my capabilities + self-worth to do so. I wasn't happy with the direction my career was heading 5 years ago when I started my original blog, Brave Girl. I watered myself down trying to "fit in". Brave Girl was the catalyst to where I'm at now as a freelance designer and for my recent rebrand to Emily Bode. As it turned out, I wasn't the only one feeling this courage and daring to live by it. Many female creatives have found a Brave Girl within themselves too and have since shared that my blog has helped them recognize it. Maybe she was quieted accidentally, or intentionally, or pushed to the sidelines for a while. There is a Brave Girl within all of us and I'm honored to have shared my experience with that feeling. Even though I'm writing and creating under a new blog of my own name now, the Brave Girl Spirit I start with is still very prevalent in topics I share.

K - Dream Collaboration?
E - You, Kherington!

I used to think collaborating with a national corporate brand or publication would be the sign I "made it". This is not to say I wouldn't love to collaborate with the likes of Darling Magazine, Cuyana, or Megan Gilger of The Fresh Exchange because those would be nice. I just mean in dreaming of those partnerships I forgot the magic that happens in collaborating with your neighbor. I've found so much joy and friendship in joining forces with amazing women like you and other local creatives. I'd love to collaborate on a community event or a shop product of some sort.

K - What song is C U R R E N T L Y on repeat?
E - September Song by JJ Cooper

K - What is something your followers don't know about you?
E - My go-to meal when I'm stressed is a medium fry and small chocolate shake from McDonald's. Tell tale sign I'm wound up. Ha!

K - What does "Community Over Competition" mean to you?
E - CONFIDENCE! It's natural to feel there isn't room for your success if a peer is successful by similar standards. However, this is an outdated survival mindset that needs fine tuning. I see it as a growth opportunity within when I feel that red jealousy flag flying. SHE CAN WIN. YOU CAN WIN. It needn't be either or. It takes confidence in your abilities to not feel threatened by some one else's. It takes confidence to ask for help without fearing you'll "lose" or you're "less". It takes trust to share your tips with a peer and know they won't "steal" and will give credit when it's due. I'd be lying if I said I didn't struggle with it, but women need each other. We're more capable of lifting each other up and succeeding together.

I told you Emily is amazing, right?! I even learned something new about her too - that we share the same stress relieving snack. {Only I swap out the small chocolate shake for vanilla!}
