Invest | /in'vest/ verb | Devote (one's time, effort, or energy) to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.

What's your word? The first time I was ever asked that question was in 2018 by Destiney aka Mom Crush Monday. If you know me, I'm naturally a goal oriented person so instead of jumping on a resolution that will fall off within weeks, I like to focus on aspects of my life that I can work on continuously + will benefit me long term. 2018 was all about I N T E N T I O N - especially when it came to business as a content creator + content strategist. I wanted to make sure whatever direction I decided to go was with intention + purpose, which made every decision easier to navigate with that word in mind. Before I officially DIVE IN to 2020, I wanted to take some time to reflect on the past year + how I've been honing in on the word - I N V E S T ! I already knew going into 2019 that word would be my focus, since I was so busy living with intention in 2018 I forgot to invest in myself. Today, I'm sharing how I've been investing in ALL areas of my life {+ what WORD I will be focusing on in 2020}.

Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I take my business very seriously. When I decided to start blogging full time {herehere + here}, I knew I wanted to do so in a way that would afford me to be home with my daughter Bentlee. At the end of the day if I expect my clients to invest in me, I have to be willing to do the same.

A few ways I have invested in my business...
- Business Coaching | You've heard me talk about Jereshia Hawk in the past {a High Ticket Sales Coach from Detroit}. At the end of December 2018, I enrolled in her Services That Sell program and it's already one of the best business decisions I've made so far! Her program has helped me with my overall money mindset, challenged me to think bigger picture, + package my Content Strategy services in a way that makes the overall process easier for my clients. The best part of this investment? It keeps on giving. I have lifetime access + am going through the program again as I launch new services centered around assisting small boutique business owners with Influencer Marketing!

- Experimenting with Video | As a content creator, it's easy to start getting in a rut, especially when it comes to what I'm posting on social media. While I love predictable content for my audience, I also like to switch things up. 2019 was the year of VIDEO for me + an investment that paid off in so many ways. I stepped out of my comfort zone + officially launched my Youtube channel in January! Not only did this reignite my love for creating content, it's been fun to experiment with different video styles {vlogging, thrift hauls, travel} whether that be shooting myself or hiring a videographer - shoutout to Darline & Co. for some of my favorite styled videos. As a result, I ended up reaching 1K subscribers in the fall, my first video hitting 2K views + work with a few brands via travel guides + product unboxing. Opportunities I would have never experienced if I didn't take the risk + go all in on the investment!

- Mindset Coaching | Coaching has definitely played a key part in my personal + business growth. + like my girl Topsie Vandenbosch always says, "coaches need coaches" - which may also be one of the reasons she is mine! In December I enrolled in Topsie's new group coaching program, Escape the Thought Spiral. One of the many reasons I wanted to make this investment {besides the fact that Topsie is just an AMAZING + genuine woman} is that despite taking risks, there are still areas of my business that I hold myself back. I knew it had to be something more deeply rooted + if you have ever watched Topsie's free mini trainings on Instagram, you know she has the ability to pull out those deeply rooted feelings + read you like a book! {Lol!} I am C U R R E N T L Y halfway through the course + I have already been able to see MAJOR shifts in my mindset - which is the best way to be going into a new decade!

I mentioned in the beginning of this post that while I was working on being more INTENTIONAL in 2018, I was lacking in the INVESTMENT department, especially when it came to myself. The decision to INVEST begins + ends with ME + taking the time to do that has been a MAJOR GAME CHANGER in my life. I have learned that if I'm not taking time for myself, I cannot show up fully for others - which has quickly become non-negotiable as a wife, mom + business owner.

A few NON-NEGOTIABLE investments I've made...
- Committing to a Fitness Routine | If you would have told me a few years ago that I wouldn't be able to go a week without working out, I would have laughed in your face {while stuffing my face with a cheeseburger}. That all changed the minute I stepped foot into Barre Code Grand Rapids in March! I had taken barre classes in the past + knew it was the best fitness routine for me, I just struggled with consistency + finding a community I felt fully a part of. The week I visited Barre Code for the first time, they were celebrating their 1 Year Anniversary with a week of free classes! I had always wanted  to visit their location + I'm so happy I got out of my own way + went! Fast forward 10 months + I've surpassed 100 classes, hosted a private event + become their FIRST Brand Ambassador! Committing to a fitness routine has been one of the more unexpected investments I've made, but also one that allows me to show up as my best self!

- Hiring a Sitter 1x A Week | This could probably fall under a business investment too, but at the end of the day this small change has done wonders for my sanity! Lol! As a mom of a now 4 year old, I've been seeing small glimpses of freedom for myself + independence for my daughter. Hiring a family friend as our sitter 1 afternoon a week has taken this to the next level! Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter + am so happy to have a job that allows me to be home with her. At the same time, I'm working on work-life integration + time apart is key! Plus, you'd be surprised how much you can get done with an uninterrupted afternoon. On the business side, that's when I schedule client calls, meetings, co-working dates, + photoshoots. On the personal side, I'll take trips to Target, run errands, clean my house or soak up some series ME TIME!

- Prioritizing Self-Care | Drake was really on to something with the "nails done, hair done, everything did" - it really does make a difference! Lol! Self-care has been my number one priority! From getting my hair cut at Henchmen House Barbershop to a monthly nail appointment {I get mine dipped so it's most definitely NON-NEGOTIABLE}. I've also been getting Dermaplaning Facials regularly since August at Chasing Vanity Salon & Medi Spa - an appointment I look forward to each month! One thing I have learned is that self-care looks different for everyone + doing what makes me feel most confident + empowered is always worth investing in.

I can honestly say 2019 was a major year for myself when it came to growth + I definitely feel like focusing on the world INVEST made an impact on that. With all of that being said, I'm excited to share my new word for 2020!

BOUNDARIES | noun | A line which marks the limits of an area.

Just like the previous year, this word comes from an area I have been lacking in {+ it became even more apparent as I was taking the time to invest in myself}. I'm excited to see what my growth transformation will look like as I work on setting boundaries for myself in life and business. I'll be sure to share what that looks like along the way.

In the meantime, what's YOUR word? + if you don't focus on a word, how will you set the tone for this new decade in 2020? It does happen to be a LEAP YEAR, so there's an extra 24 hours to get after those goals! I sure know I need it!
